St. Mary's Leads in Developing State Trauma System
St. Mary’s has taken a lead role in the organization of District 10 Trauma Regional Advisory Council (D10TRAC). We began in April 2011 holding quarterly meetings throughout the district and inviting all of the District 10 hospitals and EMS providers. Utilizing our Pediatric Medical Director, Dr. Millikan’s experience in Texas as a guiding force, we were able to demonstrate how a regional trauma system in conjunction with a state wide trauma system should be developed.
Indiana is one of the last states not to have an organized trauma system in place. Trauma accounts for millions of emergency department visits each year. There are many studies proving that trauma patient mortality rates decline significantly when these patients are cared for in a trauma center. An organized trauma system helps get these patients to appropriate trauma centers.
We are moving forward in the state with the assistance of the State Trauma Care Committee of which Dr. Lanzarotti our Adult Medical Director is a member. This committee was established in 2009 by the Executive Order of Governor Mitch Daniels to the Indiana State Department of Health is designated as the lead agency for the development, implementation, and oversight of a statewide comprehensive trauma care system to prevent injuries, save lives, and improve the care and outcome of individuals injured in Indiana.
We now have By Laws in place as well as began work on a website for our D10TRAC. We continue to make great strides for trauma care in our district and in the state of Indiana. The next step for this committee will be to assist hospitals in our district to becoming verified trauma centers as well as assist in performance improvement initiatives. Jasper Memorial Hospital is considering Level III verification and St. Mary’s Warrick has begun to submit data to the Indiana State Trauma Registry.
This is an exciting time in Indiana and these steps will improve care of trauma patients in our state. The goal of a trauma system is to get the right patient to the right place at the right time. This helps save lives!
