Support Services - Smoking Cessation Education

At St. Mary's we understand it is not easy to stop smoking. Patients often have questions about how to overcome obstacles they face when trying to quit or what products are available to help them stop.

Under a physician's direction, our Licensed Respiratory Therapists, Nurses and Pharmacists provide smoking cessation education.  This professional counseling has been shown to reinforce your efforts to quit, and ultimately helps you reach your goal of abstaining from smoking.

If you quit:

  • Within 20 minutes heart rate and blood pressure return to normal
  • Within 8 hours oxygen levels in the blood return to normal
  • Within 24 hours your chance of heart attack decreases
  • Within 48 hours the ability to smell and taste is enhanced
  • Within 2-3 months circulation improves and lung function increase by as much as 30%
  • Within 9 months coughing, congestion, fatigue, and shortness of breath decreases
  • After 1 year risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker
  • After 5 years lung cancer death rate for the average former smoker is cut in half
  • After 10 years lung cancer death rate is similar to that of a nonsmoker
  • After 15 years coronary heart disease risk is that of a nonsmoker

As you can see, it is never too late to quit smoking. The benefits begin instantly, and the body is quickly on the road to recovery.
