Community Health

St. Mary's Community Health began in 1997 in an effort to bridge the gap in access to healthcare for those on its fringes. It helps us reach into our community and create a healthier future for those we serve. The ultimate goal of this outreach is to help students to become healthy, fit and ready to learn the skills they need now and for a healthy future.

With these programs St Mary's is able to bring health education, intervention and awareness to the children, parents and families of our community. We are able to provide various services through a working collaboration with the school administrations and health services.

Community Health promotes prevention, wellness and healthy life choices to students, as well as to parents and faculty. Activities include health-fairs, individual consultations, school wellness activities, professional workshops, age specific education classes, as well as providing a reference of accurate information to school personnel on various health topics.

Asthma Camp

St. Mary's Camp Nota-Gona-Wheeze for Children with Asthma

Camp Nota-Gona-Wheeze is a free, week-long day camp designed specifically for children with asthma. It takes place each year at an EVSC school during Spring Break. Sponsored and staffed by St. Mary's, Camp Nota-Gona-Wheeze provides children with the most current education on living with asthma.

The program is staffed with St. Mary's Outreach Services Jackie Richards, a Registered Respiratory Therapist, and Molly Ralph, a Registered Dietician. They work with USI nursing students, respiratory therapy students and USI faculty, EVSC staff, 4-H, Anthem, and the public health department staff to teach students how to use their meds appropriately.

Children learn things like:

  • How to manage their asthma
  • How to take their medicine
  • What can cause their asthma to get worse
  • Ways to cope with feeling different
  • How to recognize and treat symptoms
