Mental Health Services

Sometimes people face challenges that become overwhelming. St. Mary's offers a variety of mental health services to help you live a well-rounded, fulfilling life. In addition to adult mental health needs, St. Mary's provides a wide variety of Pediatric Psychology Resources for children who require assistance with their psychological and emotional needs.

Adult Mental Health Unit

St. Mary's Adult Mental Health Unit is for our patients who require short-term treatment for an acute phase of a psychiatric illness or for stabilization of an acute episode requiring the safety and security of a mental health unit. Patients may be admitted by Psychiatrists with St. Mary's admitting privileges. Psychiatric Consults are also provided on the Acute St. Mary's Medical Units.

Treatment modalities, which are offered by a multi-disciplinary team, include:

  • Individual Therapy
  • Group Therapy
  • Education Therapy
  • Recreation Therapy
  • Electroconvulsive Therapy

The Adult Mental Health Unit does not provide primary substance abuse treatment but may treat an accompanying acute mental health condition and then coordinate post-discharge substance abuse treatment. Patients are assessed in the St. Mary's Emergency Department by a Master's Prepared Social Worker (Intake Specialist) who consults with the St. Mary's Psychiatrist to determine the level of care needed.

Kempf Bipolar Wellness Center

Thanks to an extraordinary act of generosity from the Edwina Kempf family, St. Mary's is providing opportunities for education, networking and services for people living with bipolar disorder.

St. Mary's Kempf Bipolar Wellness Center and Mental Health America join efforts to facilitate monthly Bipolar Support Group meetings. The group meets from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., every first and third Wednesday of the month at the Kempf Bipolar Wellness Center, which is located on the third floor of the St. Mary's Rehabilitation Institute. The meetings are free and no pre-registration is required. For more information, please call 812.485.4934.

The Kempf Bipolar Wellness Center is located in St. Mary's Rehabilitation Institute – the building closest to Washington Avenue. The entrance of the Rehabilitation Institute faces the Hospital Main Entrance.

Enter through the double doors and look for the elevators in the right corner of the lobby area. Take the elevators to the third floor. Exit the elevator to the right and follow the hallway to the left. The Kempf Bipolar Wellness Center meeting room is on the left.

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a treatment for severe episodes of major depression, mania and some types of schizophrenia. It involves the use of a brief, controlled electrical current to produce a seizure within the brain. This seizure activity is believed to bring about certain biochemical changes which may cause your symptoms to diminish or to even disappear. A series of treatments, generally six to twelve, given at a rate of three per week, is required to produce such a therapeutic effect, although sometimes a smaller or larger number may be necessary. ECT requires a psychiatrist's referral.
