Disaster Preparedness - the Role of the Emergency Department

Emergency Services plays an integral part in St. Mary's emergency management plan to deal with disaster issues regarding competing priorities, effective communications, handling misinformation, public confusion, and decontamination needs.

We provided excellence in care after the 2005 Tornado as well as during the ice storm of 2008.

St. Mary's conducts internal drills to test and improve our response plans.  We have also partnered with our community and region to explore our role in larger scale events. We have invested in the purchase of equipment and in the training of our staff to offer our community the highest level of protection if disaster strikes.

Our decontamination room is designed for patients who have been involved in chemical spills or who have highly infectious diseases. Emergency Medical Services personnel bring these patients directly into the decontamination room through a special entrance for the protection of other patients and staff.
