Student Extern Program
This is a three level program that students can advance through during their nursing program. Students will have the opportunity to develop nursing skills, critical thinking, and grow as a compassionate St. Mary's nurse.
Student Extern I
Students enrolled in a nursing program but who have not entered their first semester of hospital clinical may be considered for a Student Extern I position. Students will develop basic skills to provide quality patient care and become comfortable in a hospital setting.
Student Extern II
When students complete their first hospital clinical, they will be eligible to be a Student Extern II. Students will have the opportunity to choose a unit of their interest, and precept 1:1 with a Registered Nurse for 8 hours every two weeks. Assessments, critical thinking, and skills will be developed with the supervision of their preceptor.
Student Extern III
When students are ready to begin their final year of their nursing program, they may be eligible for a Student Extern III position. Students will have the opportunity to choose a unit of their interest, and precept 1:1 with a Registered Nurse. Students are eligible for up to 16 hours every two weeks of precepted time. Dedicated classroom time, assessments, critical thinking, and skills will be developed in this level with the supervision of their preceptor.
Schedules are flexible and are mutually agreed upon by the student and nurse mentor.
