Medical Interpreter Available|
St. Mary’s Health System is pleased to announce that Guillermo Guevara has become a certified Medical Interpreter.
Guevara is a Health Access Advocate in St. Mary’s Community Outreach Department, serving families living in Vanderburgh County. Guevara will facilitate St. Mary’s medical interpreter service to non-English speaking clients, with specific focus on the Spanish-speaking population. The goal of this service is to ensure our patients are able to fully participate in their medical plan of care.
To earn his certification, Guevara attended an intensive 40 hour training program at St.Vincent Health in Indianapolis this past July. The course is called “Bridging the Gap” (BTG) and was developed by the Cross Cultural Health Care Program (CCHCP) in Seattle, Washington.
The “Bridging the Gap” program covers:
- Basic Interpreter Skills
- Information on Health Care
- Culture in Interpreting
- Communication Skills for Advocacy
- Professional Development
Guevara says, “It is important for St. Mary’s to cover the existing need of not just the growing Spanish population in Evansville, but all ethnic groups currently residing in our area.”
St. Mary’s, in conjunction with St.Vincent’s Health, will host a 40 hour Medical Interpreter Course – the first of its kind in Southern Indiana – on September 17th, 18th and 19th and again on October 9th and 10th. The program will run from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. each day and will be held in the Gift Conference Room, which is located in the lobby of the Hospital for Women and Children on the St. Mary’s campus.
A group of St. Mary’s employees, in addition to participants from other organizations in the community, have already registered for the course. A few spots remain. If you are interested in becoming a Medical Interpreter, please call Guillermo Guevara today at 812.485.5602. Space is limited and the deadline to register is September 1st.
