What´s New At St. Mary´s
Partnership Formed with St. Thomas Research Institute

St. Mary’s Health System is happy to announce that it has formed a new partnership with the St. Thomas Research Institute. The St. Thomas Research Institute, which has managed patient-focused clinical trials for the Middle Tennessee community since 2000, will develop and manage a new research program for St. Mary’s.

The St. Thomas Research Institute is a Nashville-based organization with several locations in Middle Tennessee, which focus on advancing treatment options and improving the health of the community. The St. Thomas Research Institute currently employees 25 full-time and part-time employees, several of whom will serve the St. Mary’s research program.

“St. Mary’s Heart Institute has been involved in a number of national and international clinical trials since 1980. I am pleased to welcome the St. Thomas Research Institute to our community in order to expand our research program,” said Jan Ernest, Vice President of Cardiovascular Services for St. Mary’s Health System. “St. Thomas’ team will bring its expertise in clinical trials in terms of operating procedures and business development.”

“Our team, which has decades of combined research experience, will work in conjunction with the St. Mary’s staff to develop and manage the new research program,” said Kathy Taylor, Managing Director for the St. Thomas Research Institute. “We will provide the processes and services to develop and manage a fully-integrated research center for St. Mary’s.” The St. Thomas Research Institute is a free-standing entity under St. Thomas Health Services, a network of hospitals that includes St. Thomas and Baptist Hospitals in Nashville, Middle Tennessee Medical Center in Murfreesboro and Hickman Community Hospital in Centerville. Both STHS and St. Mary’s are affiliated with Ascension Health, the largest not-for-profit health system in the United States.

While Saint Mary’s will focus on the day-to-day operations of the new research program, the St. Thomas Research Institute will utilize its strong relationships with nationally-recognized trial sponsors with an emphasis on cardiovascular and internal medicine research.
