Making Miracles Happen --
You may have wondered about the health of your unborn child. Most pregnancies result in a healthy baby. However, all mothers have a 2 - 3% chance of giving birth to a baby with physical or mental challenges. The Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Genetics Center at St. Mary's Hospital for Women & Children is here to help.
Genetic counseling helps families understand birth defects and inherited conditions. You may have a condition which can result in birth defects or pregnancy loss, or your age may indicate to your obstetrician that advanced prenatal tests are required.
Our diagnostic tools can help identify problems before birth, allowing the family to be prepared for a possible medical emergency. Our genetic counselor is certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling and is available to explain your test results. Our office will assist you in obtaining any help that you might need.
Some chronic medical conditions, like diabetes and cardiac disease, can make a pregnancy difficult. You may be experiencing pregnancy-related conditions, such as preterm labor or hypertension. Perhaps you are pregnant with multiples.
No matter your condition, our maternal-fetal specialists are dedicated to providing world-class care to the high-risk mother and her unborn child. Through early diagnosis and aggressive intervention, our practice can help bring your baby safely into the world.
In case hospitalization is required, St. Mary's has established a pregnancy special care unit within St. Mary's Hospital for Women and Children.
The Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Genetics Center at St. Mary’s Hospital for Women & Children, located on the second floor, is not just for pregnant women; however, our advanced ultrasound equipment is ideal for diagnosing gynecological problems and developing a treatment plan. Under the direction of Mureena Turnquest Wells, M.D. and Laura Hughes, M.D., patients may be treated by a warm and caring staff including a clinical nurse specialist, a genetic counselor, registered diagnostic sonographers and a dedicated support staff.
The Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Genetics Center at St. Mary's is pleased to be part of your healthcare team.
