Spirituality in the Workplace

Spirituality in the Workplace

Some of the ways we integrate and live "Spirituality in the Workplace" as St. Mary's Employees:

  • As St. Mary's Health System, we are a faith-based organization
  • The word "spirituality" comes from Latin word "spiritus" which means "breath" ... referring to the "breath of God" present within each of us because we are created in God's image and likeness
  • As we come to work we each are called to honor and respect this presence of God within ourselves and in each person we work with and serve.
  • We each bring our own unique "spirituality" to work with us and we also embrace and live from the corporate "spirituality" of St. Mary's as expressed in our Mission Statement and Values.
  • Our personal spirituality and our St. Mary's spirituality are expressed and made visible in the way we relate with one another, in our respect, kindness, and compassion. We strive to treat others as God would want us to treat them.
  • Our spirituality is also expressed in many other ways. Examples:

    * as we pause to pray before we begin our staff and department meetings
    * as we prayerfully reflect on our Mission and Values together
    * as we take time out to reflect together during Renewal Days
    * as we highlight and celebrate our Founders' Days during the year
    * as we acknowledge and celebrate various religious holidays and
    seasons during the year
    * as we share and use the Daily Reflections and Monthly Gathering Prayers which are sent out to all on e-mail
    * as we respect and honor each person's faith tradition and relationship with God
    * as we offer spiritual support through our Chaplain services
    * as we make contact with patients' and families' faith communities and ministers to offer spiritual support at their request
  • We encourage one another to nurture and grow in our own inner spirituality so that we can live from and share the strength and beauty of this gift in our ministry as St. Mary's employees.
  • Since we work in a faith-based ministry, we have the opportunity and privilege to express and live our "spirituality" in our workplace as we seek to heal the body, mind, and spirit of those we serve.
