St. Mary's Pediatric Psychologist Shares His Thoughts
Dear parents and professionals,
As a father of six and a pediatric psychologist, I know that parenting is full of challenges and potential pitfalls, but it is also full of great opportunities and reward. We live in a great country with serious challenges. Health issues have increasingly plagued our children, many of which are very preventable. This does not have to be the case. We as parents form the largest body of any kind. This means that when we are able to work together for the betterment of our children, our collective force is unlike any other. If certain trends of our time do not support the health and well-being of our children, we have the ability to make dramatic changes where they need to occur. I encourage all of you to read the book, Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell to get one perspective on just how this can happen.
My goal for these monthly articles is to delve into topics that affect us every day. Certain areas deserve greater attention, and so some of the columns will be done in a series format. The topics will be many and varied. The common thread is that they all are pertinent to our lives as parents and as human beings. I will work to integrate important research, but also raise questions that we must address so that our children, our families, and our community can thrive and prosper. My hope is that it will be useful in making decisions for our children that are based on our own values and cutting edge science.
