5 South is a unit filled with highly skilled professionals offering the best of patient care to the patient receiving surgical care. Staff are active in Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses and develop evidence-based practice on the American Nurse Association (ANA) and AMSN standards. Twenty eight percent of the RNs hold Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN) certification.  Associates are empowered to make a difference by becoming involved in unit specific as well as hospital wide task forces.

General Surgery offers state of the art care for patients with surgical needs including, but not limited to thoracic, abdominal, colorectal, genitourinary, peripheral vascular, ENT, eye procedures, plastic & reconstructive, trauma, & bariatric. 

Patient Population:

  • Adolescent to Geriatric

Number of Beds:

  • 46 beds

Nurse/Patient Ratio:

  • 1 RN:5-6 patients


  • 4, 8, & 12 hour shifts, every 3rd weekend

Unit Orientation:

  • Individualized, guided both by a preceptor and a Nursing Professional Development specialist. Length of orientation depends on progress and attainment of competencies.
